Second annual tennis tournament held.

Crestmont Classic Tennis Tournament men’s open winners accept their prize money.

Over 80 tennis players gathered in early March for the second annual Crestmont Classic Tennis Tournament under sunny skies at the Peninsula Racquet Club in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., to benefit The Salvation Army’s College for Officer Training at Crestmont.

This year’s tournament raised $11,121, which is over $2,000 more than in 2007.

Training Principal Major Steve Smith commented: “The Crestmont tennis tournament gives us a great opportunity to interact with the community surrounding us and educate them about our mission.”

Players traveled from as far as Utah to take part in the event, including actress and singer, Brenda Epperson, who played a lead character on the CBS series The Young and the Restless for seven years. While on the show, Brenda realized that her commitment to God had to remain a priority—she was able to lead several cast members to Christ.

Along with acting as a link between the The Salvation Army and the community, the tournament also served as a learning experience for the cadets as they worked to partner with sponsoring organizations. These skills will help with fundraisers they might have to coordinate in the future as corps officers.
