Chico’s Annual Turkey Bowl puts birds on tables

THREE TEAMS OF bowlers gather after competing in Chico’s 9th Annual Turkey Bowling fundraiser.


The Chico Salvation Army held their 9th Annual Turkey Bowling fundraiser to provide turkeys to needy families for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Three teams—Northern California News (NCN) Channels 12 and 24 anchors, KALF Radio announcers, and Bidwell Jr. High students—all competed for the highest bowling score.

The only catch: they were throwing frozen turkeys down the Raley’s Supermarket aisle rather than the traditional bowling alley. Four frozen turkeys were sacrificed for the benefit of many.

This event, along with a penny drive at Bidwell Jr. High, raised enough money to purchase 200 turkeys for Thanksgiving and another 600 birds for Christmas. “This hilarious event allows us to raise money so that families can enjoy a traditional dinner together at home for the holidays,” said Chico Corps Officer Captain Ray Yant. “The news coverage also helps raise awareness of both need and the lengths community leaders will go to provide for needy families.”

Though the well-dressed newscasters from NCN News started out strong in the first few frames, it was the proficient bowlers from KALF radio that finished off the fifth frame on top. The junior high students may have come in third place, but their enthusiasm and technique dazzled everyone.

The final score: Bidwell Jr. High in third place at 163, NCN News in second place at 169 and KALF radio with a top score of 172 pins.
