Cadets Raise Funds for World Services

In towns and villages around the world, the poor, the destitute, the homeless, the unloved-those in need physically and spiritually-those for whom no one cares-feel the love of God through the generous giving of Salvationists through the Army’s World Services appeal.

Raising funds for World Services took on a musical note recently as the Messengers of God’s Love and the Builders of the Kingdom sessions presented a time capsule of musical entertainment at the College for Officer Training’s Terrace dining room.

Capacity crowds attended the annual World Services event. Friday evening was a special affair arranged for the College Advisory Council and local advisory boards to enable community leaders to experience the work of the college, and to meet and interact with the cadets.

The evening included a reception hosted by Commissioners Peter and Grace Chang, a delicious dinner, and the performance of “Down Melody Lane,” music and comedy from the ’20s through the ’70s.

Saturday’s events included a morning brunch with extra activities for children and two entertaining dinner performances featuring musical classics.

The primary purpose of the occasion is to raise funds for the World Services effort of The Salvation Army in the Western Territory. The year-long focus of world missions is central to the college curriculum. This is particularly true this year as several cadets attended the Urbana Missions conference during the Christmas break, and Major Cindy Lowcock of the college staff served on a missions service team to India before the training session began in August of 1996. A delegation of cadets also attended the International Youth Congress in South Africa.

“This year’s dinner theater was a great success. It was a wonderful event which represented a great deal of effort by the cadets and staff of the college. I appreciate the support given by the many friends from the community and the surrounding corps,” said Major Terry Griffin, training principal.
