An estimated 33 million men, women and children in the United States go to bed hungry each night. In an effort to combat hunger and ensure that cupboards are full for the most needy in our community, the Boys Scouts of America will fan out across the country and “Scout for Food” on Saturday, Nov. 6 and Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004.

In Southern California, the Boy Scouts’ goal is to collect two million cans of food, most of which will be donated to The Salvation Army. Boy Scouts will place collection bags on doorsteps on Nov. 6 and then return on Nov. 13 to collect bags filled with canned goods. The food will be dropped off at predetermined corps community centers and program units throughout Southern California.
The Scouting for Food initiative is a part of the Boy Scouts of America’s “Good Turn for America” program, designed to partner the Boy Scouts and its thousands of members and participants with other groups and organizations to better meet community needs.

Nationally, the Boy Scouts of America, The Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, and the American Red Cross are collectively asking every American to address the food, shelter, and health of their community. Through the combined efforts of these organizations and other groups that provide similar service in communities around the country, families will have sufficient food to eat and homelessness can be reduced.
